I'm a lover of the outdoors and a gun guy, but not a big hunter, I figured this might be an enjoyable book, especially since it is told from an unusual perspective for the times - a tomboy and then grown woman hunter, a fellow lover of nature.I thought I had had some adventures in the wild - well, the Sierras and Rockies of the Lower 48 - and I'd been to Alaska, but wow - Donna Morang has lived it.This is the story of her outdoor hunting and fishing life from a girl just old enough to fire a pellet gun in Montana, up to a grown woman taking down - wait for it - a POLAR BEAR! Now before the environmentalists jump all over me or her, this was in the 1960s, and Polar Bears were not endangered, and in fact, they killed a fair number of people every year so they had to be culled some. But let's not get too wrapped up in hotbutton topics, because even the most dyed-in-the-wool non-shooter will appreciate the story of when Donna and her husband had to defend themselves against a very angry bear that decided to hunt humans. Well, it seemed fair. Breathe much? I hardly could when I read that story. How would you feel if such a fearsome monster almost killed you? Wow. In the days of fake CGI monsters on the screen, this real one was genuinely fearsome.Storms, floods, gold mining, hunting caribou and big sheep, fishing for salmon the size of your whole leg, observing the amazing wildlife both animal and human - this story has it all. Comedy, tragedy, adventure, humor - the old saw "I laughed, I cried, I almost died" certainly applies here. What a fantastic book, and I mostly read fiction. But this was a real treat. Can I give it six stars? At first I was hesitant to be completely happy until I realized this was the writers experience and her life and she was a hunter and a mother first and foremost. After deciding to read forward from that perspective it became a wonderful read of a woman's adventure that I would never of had the courage to partake in. It makes me secure to know women have the strength to do the things that forward their and their own children's survival. I also enjoyed hearing about hunting from a women's perspective and what it meant to her in terms of her own spirit and providing for her family.
